Benches, students getting ready
Miguel Guante, our missionary to Haiti, reported on Sept. 20, 2006, that the border from Jimani, Dominican Republic into Haiti had been closed to most vehicles since June. “Only motor(cycles) may cross with some danger,” Guante said.
But on Monday, Sept. 18, Haitian authorities reopened the border to traffic. “As soon as I know the border is open, I carry the benches to Soliette, (and) from there the pastor (Meristaire Tresin) will carry it to Jeantilhome,” Guante said.
The wood Guante delivered was purchased by Climbing For Christ in June. It was bought to provide the church in Jeantilhome with 10 benches. More will be built in the coming months.
The church is also being used as a school. Guante said there are 92 children enrolled in the new school, ranging in age from 5 to 21 years old. There has not been a school in Jeantilhome and, as a result, most children have never been taught to read or write. Education, as well as medical attention to the many who are ill in Jeantilhome, is a priority as we continue to do God's work in this village on a hill.
