Craig Beck

Thanks to Chip for serving in Pennsylvania!

Craig Beck on the summit of Mount Washington, N.H. on July 11, 2008.

Born: April 8, 1977. Residence: Lancaster, PA. Occupation: I’ve worked for 10 years at Sight & Sound Theatres are the Lead Animal Trainer of the smaller critters (birds, dogs, skunks, alpacas, etc.).

How long have you climbed? On and off over the last seven years.

Type of climbing you do: Rock gyms, day-hikes, and I’m looking forward to starting bouldering.

Highlight of climbing career: The climbing wall at the Bass Pro Shop. Just kidding. From July 8-15, my cousin and I journeyed to the mountains of the Northeast: Mount Washington, N.H. (6,288 feet), Mount Mansfield, Vt. (4,393' — in pouring rain), Mount Greylock, Mass. (3,491') and Mount Frissell, Conn. Then we drove to High Point, N.J .(1,803')! We drove 2,000 miles, hiked around 30 miles, climbed to the top of four states, drove to the top of one, and had the greatest time in God's hand-hewn cathedrals. It was awesome to see God challenge me and abide with me through the good, bad and wonderful of it all as we trekked His masterpiece — truly was ministered to deeply by just being in His Creation! I hope to journey out towards western PA and the top of Pennsylvania — Mount Davis (3,213’) — and one day to Mount Marcy in New York (5,344’).

How long have you been a Christian? I have been a Christian for 20-plus years, but recommitted to follow the Lord my senior year of high school.

Type of ministry you are blessed to serve in: Audio visual, evangelism, service, training animals. I haven't done anything like this (leading a Climbing For Christ chapter) since I led the Campus Crusade for Christ at Penn State-Schuylkill campus, 10 years back.

Favorite Scripture verse (and why): It's more so the one I live by most often — Philippians 4:13. It spurs me on. I repeat it as I work out and as I endure challenging circumstances and easy ones, too!

Special “God moment”: I often daydream of a run I took about seven-plus years ago, I was just running as I often do, but I felt so close to God and was able to really see Him in everything. From the beauty of the day to how perfectly everything fit together. A hot-air balloon went by, a one-engine plane, a farmer in the field, a horse and buggy, a babbling stream. It was like a movie scene, too perfect to be real, but it was and it was just for me and all I was doing was enjoying a run in the countryside. It was a great moment to appreciate and acknowledge His hand in and around my life!

Bonus special “God moment”: Also, on a five-peaks hike in the Northeast in July (photo above), it was amazing to see His hand-hewn cathedrals. The beauty and challenge of the trails were all testimonies to His great power and His magnificent creativity. It was personally and spiritually revitalizing!
